A Barren Heart by Shilpa Suraj

~ Book Tour ~

A Barren Heart by Shilpa Suraj

About the Book:
When having it all isn’t enough…

Aman and Rhea seem to have the perfect marriage. They are madly in love - with each other, with their own careers and the home and life they are building in a quiet Mumbai suburb.
Rhea is a successful interior designer with a thriving business while Aman is a commercial pilot who is at peace with his life, on the ground and in the skies! What could possibly be lacking in their picture-perfect marriage?

A baby.

Like most women, thirty plus Rhea Chakraborty, wants to hold her own flesh and blood in her arms. And Aman too wants the same.

Or does he?

After another unexplained miscarriage that takes a severe emotional, physical, and psychological toll on them, Aman isn't sure if having a baby will complete them or destroy them.
Suddenly, Rhea and Aman find the fabric of their stable marriage fraying beneath the strain of their failed conceptions. Where once they were a team with a common goal, they now find themselves on opposite sides with shifting goalposts.

A Barren Heart is set in so-called modern India and is the story of the struggle of an affluent, educated couple who are still fighting the shackles of societal indoctrination and expectations and losing each other in the process.

“I’m sorry. There’s no heartbeat.”
Rhea’s smile faded slowly. Confused, she looked up at the doctor but couldn’t read anything in her perpetually grumpy face.
The hard probe between her legs was withdrawn abruptly leaving a cold vacuum behind. Icy gel smeared the insides of her thighs leaving her feeling dirty and exposed even though a sheet covered the naked, lower half of her body.
The doctor hadn’t spoken since and was busy scribbling something in Rhea’s file. Rhea cleared her throat. The lady didn’t bother looking up from the file. She finished writing and handed the file to the nurse.
“We’ll scan again in two weeks for a viable pregnancy. You can go see the doctor now with the report.”
“What do you mean by that? Scan for a viable pregnancy? Am I not pregnant now? My pregnancy tests were positive.”
All she got was a pointed glare. “The doctor will answer all your questions.”
“If I have so many scans, will it affect the baby in any way?” Rhea had to ask. She couldn’t help herself. Anxiety and panic had her pulse thrumming.
“It’s not a baby until there is a heartbeat.”
Rhea’s head spun, the room doing a slow revolve. The nurse handed her a bunch of tissues, oblivious or uncaring of her turmoil. Rhea pulled herself into a sitting position and took them. Wiping herself, she pulled on her clothes slowly and made her way out of the scanning room, the file clutched to her heart.
Aman looked up the minute she stepped out of the room. A big smile split his face as he reached for the file.
“How was it? All okay?” His excitement caused her hands to shake, the file fluttering from her grasp to the floor.
Startled, Aman ignored the mess of papers at his feet and instead, hauled her into a tight embrace.
“What’s wrong, hon?”
The endearment had her tightening her hold on him. Aman was the love of her life, her rock, the stable foundation to her forever tumultuous world. Even as she held him, she felt his strength, his calm seep into her and steady her.
She said, “I’m not sure. I don’t know. The doctor inside wasn’t very clear.”
“What did she say?” Aman led her to an empty seat in the crowded waiting area.
“She said there’s no heartbeat.” Ignoring the tremor in her own voice, Rhea forced herself to keep talking. “We have to come back in two weeks to check for a viable pregnancy, whatever that means.”
Aman’s grip tightened on her hand. “Let’s go see what Dr. Vashisht has to say alright? Don’t jump to any conclusions before that.”
Rhea nodded. Yes. That was smart. She watched as he walked over to the nurse in charge and handed over her file. She heard him murmur Rhea Chakraborty, wife of Capt. Aman Gill, to the harassed looking lady.
She turned slightly away so that he couldn’t see what she was doing. Pulling out her phone, she quickly went to her one stop for everything search engine. Fingers flying, she typed, ‘six weeks pregnant no heartbeat’ and waited, heart pounding. In less than a second, the results flooded her screen.
She was still scanning them when Aman came back and sat down beside her. He took her hand and cradled it against his chest. Too caught up in what she was reading, Rhea pulled hers back immediately and pointed at the screen.
“Look at this,” she said, excitedly. “There are a ton of results about people who didn’t hear a heartbeat in the first scan but did in the second one two weeks later.”
Aman sighed. “I thought we were going to wait to hear what the doctor has to say.”
“Yes, of course,” she brushed his concern aside. “And Aman, I have none of the other worrying signs of…” She couldn’t say the word. She wasn’t even going to think it. “Of things not being okay. No bleeding, no pain, nothing. I feel great. This is good, right? There’s hope?” The last word held a wealth of uncertainty as she looked at him. “Right?”
Aman’s face softened. “Yes, there’s hope. There’s always hope.”
“That grumpy, old woman inside just frightened me for nothing. I bet we will hear our baby’s heartbeat in the next scan. Loud and strong.” Rhea was bouncing in her seat now, her earlier excitement resurfacing.
“Rhea,” Aman started to say something and then stopped at the unspoken plea on his wife’s face. “Of course,” he said, finally. “I can’t wait to hear it.”
“Loud and strong.”
“Loud and strong,” he affirmed, a silent prayer winging its way from his heart to the heavens above.
But when they came back two weeks later, there was only silence.

Gillian forces herself to trust the cops, people who hurt her, and known criminals. Will it be enough to free Pinkie and save her life?

Excerpt

Chapter 1

I flip the switch, illuminating the first bar I’ve ever managed. Rainbows of color dance through the full bottles lining the glass shelves. Glasses are stocked. Floors spotless. A chance to begin again after a not-so-perfect fresh start.

The new crew worked their butts off learning menus and setting up for today’s opening. They’re trained and ready for anything. Not sure about me, though. I’m a fast learner, a CPA, and have been a bartender. But that doesn’t mean I can run a bar. Pinkie makes it appear easy. He believes in me, and that’s more than I’ve gotten from most people in my life.

Out of the corner of my eye, I spot a note written in large block letters.

Welcome, Gillian! Breakfast in the bar fridge. You can’t start your first day as manager hungry. –Pinkie

“What?” My voice echoes in the empty room. Pinkie said he was right behind me before I left after midnight last night. When did he have time to cook? Inside the refrigerator is a container with my name written across it. I peek inside. “He remembered!” Sausage and grits, the first of his cooking I ever ate. Besides being an amazing chef, he’s been such a great mentor since I moved here, helped me survive some major screw-ups. I won’t get involved with the wrong people again.

Pinkie’s been more of a dad than my real father. If he hadn’t believed in me to run his new bar, I’d be working at another accounting job I hate instead of my dream job. Luck or not, after everything Pinkie’s done for me, I’ll never let him down.

I make careful rounds through the kitchen and bar and through my mental checklists to be sure lunch prep is in place for the crew when they arrive.

In the tiny office that used to be a closet, I lean down next to the desk, punch in the combination, and yank the safe door open to get the cash for the registers. Shoved in the back corner are two fat pouches of cash that weren’t there yesterday. Pinkie must have stashed the other bar’s deposit here, so it’s all in one place when he goes to the bank, but he normally wouldn’t.

The safe clicks closed, and I make sure the red light is glowing on the server tucked away in the corner with our new miracle restaurant management software. The crew hates it. The software is supposed to help us plan profitable marketing campaigns and stock the right inventory. It’s a brain buster and sounds like marketing BS. I promised Pinkie to make the most of it. He invested equity in his house, the other bar, and his reputation. Everything’s riding on this opening.

No pressure.

It’s time for another set of new rules to live by for my latest fresh start.

Rule one of my new fresh start—nothing will get in the way of success.

No guys will try to break my heart. I’ll use the confidence I’ve worked so hard to build. And if fate cooperates, no scandals and none of our regulars will turn up dead.

"In the past five years, I’ve lost four grandparents, three uncles, two aunts, three cousins, five classmates, and my parents. Even a car died on me..."

Comedian Michael Malone’s life has been punctuated by tragedy. He’s been to over a dozen funerals, but just three weddings - two of which were for the same friend. No stranger to loss, Malone has had ample time to reflect on what it means to grieve, and how to move forward when you’ve outlived so many of your loved ones.

Dead Serious is a look inside Malone’s mind and journal since losing his parents; a dark-humored exploration of depression, suicide, grief, and religion. Designed to be opened and read at any page, this collection of journal entries, illustrated one-liners, and humorous musings combine to create an unorthodox self-help book for anyone who has ever lost someone close to them and doesn’t know where to go from here.

Comedy has always been the lens through which Malone chooses to view the world; a way to shine a light on the dark times so his audiences feel less alone, and less crazy, during their own hardships. Dead Serious offers readers his signature comedic comfort on all life’s ups, downs, and confusing in-betweens.

Michael Malone is an award-winning comedian, actor, writer, and film director who is currently based in Los Angeles, CA. He has been featured on Showtime, Comedy Central, FOX, Hulu, XM Radio, and his Amazon Prime special, "Laugh After Death" has over 2 million views. Michael is known for his dark sense of humor that breaks down the idiotic ways we deal with life, death, love, and sex.

"If you have any doubt that the best humor comes from deep, dark places, this page-turner will make you a believer. Malone's life journey, which he describes with blinding transparency and unforgiving irony leaves you laughing your ass off as he candidly exposes how he himself has risen from the bowels of depression and self-loathing to personal and professional success." - Brad Garrett

Excerpt From the story “Tomorrow is Thursday”

My grandmother is ninety-two years of age and full of two things: shit and vinegar. Despite her age, she was both sharp as a whip and ornery as hell.

She had recently fallen on her back porch and broke her elbow, so her left arm was in a cast. She fell again a few weeks after that and sprained her right wrist. Because you know, grandmas be tripp'in.

She had both arms completely wrapped up in bandages. They just flapped around at her sides like a drunk penguin. Watching her eat lunch was equal parts heartbreaking and hilarious. She would hold her fork with one hand, steady it with the other, bend forward as far as she could, and sort of flip food into her mouth. She had the accuracy of a young Shaquille O'Neal at the free-throw line.

It was hard to watch, but my grandmother was stubborn and refused any help whatsoever. At one point, I made the mistake of scooting her pudding cup two inches closer to her seal-like grip, and she screamed at me, "You trying to feed me like a baby!?!"

"No," I nervously responded. "I just wanted to help out."

She pointed her head down like a bull, and in a low tone, she growled back at me, "I don't need anyone's help. I'm fine."

My grandmother then proceeded to clap her hands together in a sloppy attempt to pick up her spoon. It slid across her slick plastic food tray like an air hockey puck. Banking off the side railings for a few moments before she cornered it, scooped up some pudding with it, and then tossed the food towards her hunched and widened mouth.

Living Among the Dead

Biography/Memoir/History/Nonfiction/Jewish Studies/WWII
Date Published: March 3, 2020
Publisher: Amsterdam Publishers

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

This is the story of one remarkable woman's unimaginably horrific journey through the rise of the Nazi regime, the war, and the aftermath. Her story is narrated by her granddaughter and the book is interwoven with beautiful passages of poetry and personal reflection by the survivor, Mania, as she used writing as a medium to deal with the effects of the war. Most Jews did not die in concentration camps. Instead, they were murdered in their lifelong communities, slaughtered by mass killing units, and then buried in pits. Mania lived in labor camps and witnessed these inconceivable sightings while doing everything within her power to subsist. Although she was the sole survivor of her family, Mania went on to rebuild a new life in a new country, with a new language and new customs, always carrying with her the losses of her family and memories of the brutality she witnessed and lived through. Nearly eighty years post liberation of the Holocaust, we are still witnessing acts of cruelty born out of hatred and discrimination. Living among the Dead reminds us of the beautiful communities that existed before WWII, the lives lost and those that lived on, and the importance to never forget these stories so that history does not repeat itself.
